[K12OSN] problem in starting a new dual boot machine in Linux

yeah, I was helping a friend put linux on his Dell Demension 8200 today
and it was driving me nuts for a bit, but used partition magic and just
built an ext3 partition, then went into the linux setup and made the linux
partition manually during loading,  seems to be working now but pulled my
hair out for a couple hours figuring out the work around.
