If you are working on X settings you might want to uncomment
the
SCREEN_02  = shell
line in lts.conf.  Then you can ctl-alt-f2 to a shell prompt and
ssh back to the server to make the fix.  It's also handy to 
look at the client side /var/log/Xorg.0.0.log to see what is
going wrong.  For security you probably want the line commented
out except when you are debugging.
