I didn't actually try running it without Twisted. Setup.py looks for it
(print >> sys.stderr, ("%s: apparently you do not have Twisted installed.")
so I assumed it was still needed.

But it does indeed run fine without it. I'll rebuild the package without
the extra dependancy...
