Thanks for your replies.  
I have read that K/Ubuntu start up basically in root mode, but that 
it is possible to declare root and set up additonal users.  
Maybe that attibuted to the problems I read about. 

Looking forward to trying out Kubuntu at the first opportunity.  
(Currently using Mepis but curious about all the hype.
