I searched through all of the RH Bugzilla entries, even the closed
"not a bug" reports, and saw one that was related to Java VM's
and OOo:

This was running on FC4 x86_64 using the 64bit Java VM, as such
very unlikely to be the problem people are reporting... but the
symptoms sound the same.
