As root do a visudo and add the following at the bottom ofcourse
substituting appropriate uname:
{uname} ALL=(ALL) ALL

Gives you another line of entry in such events. You can also add lines
for specific root tasks for specific users - say allow some one to
only shutdown etc. etc. man sudo.
