I'm going to second Calvin's recommendation to use acpupsd and APC UPS 
devices.  I've run these on Debian and SuSE with very good results, and 
the daemon is very configurable with a lot of options set right by default.

I've run APC units for several years now, and the worst thing I've seen 
them do is have the batteries wear out, but they're easy enough to swap 
out when that inevitably happens.
