At the grub bootup splash screen (before the kernel starts loading) if
you highlight the kernel to boot from and hit "e" to edit the start
upstring, highlight the line with the actual kernel name, hit 'e' again,
go to the end of the line and add on "single", hit enter, hit 'b'.

That will let you go into single user mode where you can then edit
the /etc/inittab file and change the run level from 5 to 3. 

Now reboot, login at the prompt as root, run "startx". If that won't
run, you can ctl-alt-bkspc out (or it might even die on it's own) and go
look at the /var/log/Xorg log file for clues on the failure.

It seems like X is not finding a screen resolution it likes.
