Just one final word on this for the sake of the archives:

I have had several repeats of the XML file parsing error.  It is
generated by the timeouts and can affect any repository repomd.xml file.
When run from the command line, yum tells which repomd.xml file is
affected.  You fix things by deleting the offending file before
re-running the yum operation - if you don't the parsing problem will
persist.
