[K12OSN] Do anyone here REALLY understand LTSP and remote sound?

Ok. I am in the process of replying to Barry's questions but I think I
REALLY need to know the answer to a couple of things to proceed.

1) How can I get a dmesg for clients? I see some sort of error message for
sound shooting by when booting thin clients, but I can't find any logs
anywhere. That is very problematic. WHERE are errors logged for clients
using LTSP?  I tried adding:
SCREEN_02          = shell
(as suggested by some of the HOWTo's as a troubleshooting step)
in lts.conf but I wasn't able to get a prompt by hitting F2 once I rebooted.
I don't know why lts.conf doesn't honor it.

2) ESD doesn't appear to run unless I do: esd -port 16001 &. Then when I do
ps aux | grep esd I see:

ja  8729  0.0  0.0   2948   480 ?        Ss   10:53   0:00 /usr/bin/esd
-nobeeps
ja  9256  0.0  0.1   3216  1568 ?        SL   10:55   0:00 /usr/bin/esd
-nobeeps
root     11614  0.0  0.1   3216  1780 pts/1    SL   11:12   0:00 esd -port
16001
root     11860  0.0  0.0   2884   820 pts/0    S+   11:13   0:00 grep esd

However when I do: netstat -an | grep 16001 I don't see anything.

I feel like the client isn't able to connect to the sound server, but I
can't figure out where to gather more information.

Hope this looks familiar to someone.

Thanks for all of your collective help!

John
