AFAIK There is PATA (parallel) and there is SATA.(serial)
PATA ide hard disks are the "normal" ones and SATA are "newer" types.

So both installations are being performed on first hard disk (first
PATA ide)? Make sure that is the sequence set in your "bios" Some
times SATA drives may be recognised only on fiddling with legacy
settings in bios.

Assuming that installation got completed and this is happening on
first boot. How long before you give up? Some systems take a bit
longer before they go on, especially on first boot.
To really see what is happening press "esc" key when grub boot loader
screen comes (it remains for few seconds) and then edit the kernel
line by pressing "e". Remove the last word "quite" and and then use
"b" to boot off the modified line. You will now see more verbose
output during boot.
