Yep, we've been using alien for a long, long time.  I remember using it
about 5 years ago on Red Hat Linux 7.3 to install a .deb package.  It
does work.

There's a similar tool for Slackware, called "rpm2tgz".  That's how I
installed OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 just last night.
