You might look at something like this: http://www.linux-mail.info/mail-server-setup-centos-5/

Personally, I use two different setups depending on whether POP3s or IMAP is required:
sendmail w/ MailScanner, spamassassin, clamav, MailWatch, OpenWebMail, Qpopper, milter-greylist, and Spamhaus dns blacklisting at the MTA level.
sendmail w/ MailScanner, spamassassin, clamav, MailWatch, SquirrelMail, dovecot, milter-greylist, and Spamhaus dns blacklisting at the MTA level.

There are numerous ways to achieve what you're looking for. I'm sure others have valid reasons to recommend postfix, qmail, amavisd, or any number of different configurations. Just pick your distro of choice and dig in. You'll develop your own preferences anyway based on what works best for you and if you have any problems along the way I'm sure someone here can answer your questions.

HTH,
Rob

I'm wondering what what folks suggest in the way of an email server. I'd
like to switch to a linux based solution as the system I inherited, Merak,
is windows-based and expensive. Merak does work quite well though -- it
integrates well with Active Directory (automatically syncs email addresses
from AD users, & does AD/LDAP authentication) and provides a nice web
interface, mailing lists, spam & antivirus protection, etc. These are
features I would like to keep.

Any recommendations on a course of action that I should consider?
References to How-tos would be epecially appreciated.

Regards,
Tom Wolfe
