Can you run a traceroute to the IP in question?
I think we need a little more on the layout of your network.

eg. LTSP server 10.40.x.1, how many interfaces?

route -n will show the routes numerically
route add -net 192.168.100.0 gw (IP address of a machine/router
reachable by the 10.40.x server) will add the 192.168.100.0 network and
should only route hosts based upon that network - note that you can also
use the netmask option to limit which hosts appear in the range.

route will also take the host as a parameter, eg.
route add -host 192.168.100.45 (the machine hosting the files that you
want) gw 10.40.x
