Log into the terminal as a 'regular' user. Run the command:
export

You should see many lines.
Look for the line  /home/username
see if it is showing correctly.

Example:
declare -x HOME="/home/username" # this is logged in user's ,username
declare -x HOSTNAME="servername"
declare -x INPUTRC="/etc/inputrc"
declare -x KDEDIR="/usr"
declare -x KDE_IS_PRELINKED="1"
declare -x KDE_NO_IPV6="1"
declare -x LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
declare -x LESSOPEN="|/usr/bin/lesspipe.sh %s"
declare -x LOGNAME="username"

This is a starting point.
