Message-ID: <2flr6ta5jm3.fsf@saruman.uio.no> The Ubuntu hwdb system is asking the user what work and doesn't, and ship the information off to a database. Unfortunately, the information collected isn't easily available. Here is a post I sent to debian-devel@ i November about it: From: Petter Reinholdtsen Subject: Automatically collect hardware information from users? Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2006 23:40:17 +0100 I just discovered ubuntu got a tool I have been planning to make for Debian, the hwdb-client package making it trivial for the user to submit information about their hardware to a central location. The source for it is available from , and the data is submitted to . Anyone know more about this? That database would make the life of us discover-data maintainers a lot easier. Should we set up our own database, or can we get access to and a copy of the Ubuntu database? I notice Mandriva have a similar system also called hwdb-clients, and it report info to . Is this a similar system or the same system? It should be fairly easy to port the Ubuntu client to Debian, and the user-visible server part is a script accepting HTTP put/post. It seem to be very similar to the popularity-contest HTTP collector. The interesting parts of the server on the other hand would be the parts making reports based on the reported hardware information. I've looked at the Ubuntu page, but from what i can see it's also pretty much in it's infancy. But it's definitely worth looking at and i'll see if i can get in contact with the author and see what of the ideas we can integrate into LHCP. A very quick outlook what we're doing at the moment: I'm currently finalizing the DB backend for LHCP. We started looking at TurboGears (what smolt uses), but found that our data structures are probably not nearly stable enough, also due to the fact that we're going to allow and actually want external modules. Another thing was the queries we want to be able to do which need to be rather data structure independent. Next will be to add some usefull real modules (weather module is nice and all, but not really that useful). See the TODO list we have in the repository. I hope to get that version out with the DB support at the end of this week. More modules will get added after that. Thats the plan at least. ;) Read ya, Phil -- Philipp Knirsch | Tel.: +49-711-96437-470 Development | Fax.: +49-711-96437-111 Red Hat GmbH | Email: Phil Knirsch Hauptstaetterstr. 58 | Web: http://www.redhat.de/ D-70178 Stuttgart Motd: You're only jealous cos the little penguins are talking to me. Maybe there's some room for people helping out with web development? Have thought about using Ruby on Rails? I guess it would be great for this sort of thing (and it's certainly more mature than Python alternatives). We haven't put a lot of thought into the web part yet, so if you're interested feel free to help out. ;) Thing is, as the whole project so far is in Python (like smolt) it would be great if the web interface would be in Python as well, but it's definitely not a requirement. It probably would mean duplicate effort though as code reuse will be non existent if the web interface uses a different language than the other code. Just my EUR 0.02. ;) Read ya, Phil -- Philipp Knirsch | Tel.: +49-711-96437-470 Development | Fax.: +49-711-96437-111 Red Hat GmbH | Email: Phil Knirsch Hauptstaetterstr. 58 | Web: http://www.redhat.de/ D-70178 Stuttgart Motd: You're only jealous cos the little penguins are talking to me.
