Sorry, disregard the previous answer.

The real reason is that you don't have a virtio block driver
(virtio_blk.ko).  This needs to be built as a module in your kernel.

Is this a standard Ubuntu kernel?


Mostly, but there are some modifications.  I think the kernel team just didn't compile it in.  I'll check with them but probably nothing will be done until next week.
