We're actually performing surprisingly well, even in a VM:

$ ./run ./builder/virt-builder debian-6
[   0.0] Downloading: http://libguestfs.org/download/builder/debian-6.xz
[   1.0] Creating disk image: debian-6.img
[   1.0] Uncompressing: http://libguestfs.org/download/builder/debian-6.xz
[ 20.0] Opening the new disk
[  32.0] Setting a random seed
[ 32.0] Random root password: ChimcRMmHKraq6D2 [did you mean to use --root-password?]
[  33.0] Finishing off
Output: debian-6.img
Total usable space: 3.7G
Free space: 3.1G (85%)

Upstream libguestfs (not in 1.24) uses a built-in parallel
implementation of xzcat, and bypasses the virt-resize step if --size
is not requested on the command line.

Rich.
