most of the nastyness can be contained in a specific UUID conversion

I am going to deprecate the int[] code for UUIDs. Since we are moving to Java 1.6.. we get a UUID class in the JDK. That means we can look objects based on a string or on a UUID. The old API works, but it is marked as deprecated.
