Caveat: I have not reviewed this closely.  By mere description, this
looks useful, and similar to other recent changes, so I'm looking foward
to v2.

Patch 1/3 can be split and a part of it applied before 0.9.2 (see my
email about the two unreleased enum names that we could drop before they
become permanent due to a release), but this patch is a new feature and
should definitely be post-release, in addition to being rebased on top
of whatever happens with the 1/3 fallout.
