The one thing that's horribly wrong in some applications is performance.
If you need to have large amounts of files and frequent directory scans
(i.e. rsync etc.), you're lost.

How much of a performance improvement are you looking for, though? If it's 30% - that might happen. Even 50% might be in the realm of plausible. But if you're expecting an improvement of 10x you should probably start re-thinking the design of your application.
