Re: RHEL4 Update3: eth0 not working after upgrading from RHEL4 base

Try modefiy modprobe.conf and load the module in the booting

like this example:

[root linux ~]# cat /etc/modprobe.conf
alias eth0 tg3

[root linux ~]# lsmod | grep tg
tg3                    95429  0

then reboot the machine, it's may be kernel bug with this driver or may not.

When I try "insmod /lib/modules/2.6.9-5.EL.root.PTY/kernel/drivers/net/8139cp.ko", I am getting the following error:

"insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.9-5.EL.root.PTY/kernel/drivers/net/8139cp.ko': -1 unknown symbol in module"

"lspci" lists the following:

03:0a:0 Ethernet Controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

After Upgrading to Update3, since I couldn't load latest image (2.6.9-34.EL- observed "kernel-panic - not syncing:VFS: Unable to mount root fsonunknown -block (0.0)" ), I have booted the system with 2.6.9-5 kernel. Is this a problem in loading the driver?

Could you please put the error message?

Thanks for the advice. I will check it out.

"lspci" gives me the card details correctly. Problem is "OS" is not able to load the driver and manually doing "insmod" also giving me the error.

Please suggest me if you get more ideas.

Thanks & Regards,
Sailaja

I suggest to replace the Ethernet card, just for test and don't forgot check for kudzu service running on booting if not run it "chkconfig kudzu on" command.

Hi All,

We have updated the RHEL4 WS base version (Kernel: 2.4.9-5.EL) to RHEL4 Update3 version (downloaded from:https://rhn.redhat.com/network/software/channels/downloads.pxt?cid=2869 )

After the update "eth0" is not working and it says MAC address has been changed and couldn't detect.

I couldn't find "eth0/8169too" in "lsmod".

I tried inserting the module "8169too.ko" but it through me an error.

Every thing was working fine before the update. Can some body please suggest me what could be the problem?

Thanks & Regards,
Sailaja
