I think you're wrong, mode 0 is round robin. I've added folowing lines to /etc/modprobe.conf :
 
 alias bond0 bonding
 options bond0 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth0

Because eth0 is on a gigabit link and eth1 on a 100 megabit link, I defined eth0 as the primary interface.
