Yes -- gam_server is hard-coded to check /etc/gamin/mandatory_gaminrc when reading its config.

We had problems with gam_server spinning out of control CPU-wise, but never memory-wise. The fix for our issue was creating this file:

[skaven becker /etc]$ cat gamin/mandatory_gaminrc
# See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=210329
fsset ext3 poll 10
fsset ext2 poll 10
fsset ext poll 10
fsset nfs poll 10

if there is no /etc/gamin directory can I simply make one?
