If anyone is watching: it was actually due to this patch (fixed in repost):
CONFIG_FILE_ROOT="/file/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg"
Filesystem content is mappend in Augeas under /files/ not /file/

Filed RFE for augtool to fail early in such situations:
