It looks like you're removing the relevant terminfo files
(/usr/share/terminfo/*) and so any app that requires termcap information
isn't going to work.  You're getting lucky with linux as
a) there are also copies in /lib/terminfo and
b) linux is sort of close to xterm for the set of capabilities needed
for top
