Authen::PAM error

Hi Folks,

When I try to authenticate user using Authen::PAM
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Authen-PAM/ (version 0.17) following error is
displayed in /var/log/secure file. Linux version is CentOS 5.4. Is
Authen::PAM compatible with current versions of Linux PAM or are any changes
required

PAM unable to resolve symbol: pam_sm_authenticate

Any insights will be appreciated. Also if you have any suggestions about
Perl based modules for PAM that'll be great too. Requirement is that when
user logs in (via SSH), my code/script should be invoked to decide if
authentication passed or failed
