+1 - in this case it seems to be handled well - Cancel on screen one, X takes care of it otherwise.
Also, I would reconsider the behavior you described where you can also cancel by clicking outside box or hitting esc in the keyboard - they might be a little too error prone. If this was just an image gallery that might be ok but for a multi-step wizard. I wouldn't want to make it that easy to make a mistake and lose work.
