Simple architecture question

Hi everyone,

    I am new to piranha. I have read many guides. My question is about 
the need for an extra machine (usually called director)

1- As far as I understand, a director machine is needed for LVS cluster. 
(Using standard configuration, no need for fancy tricks)
2- Would I need this extra machine for a 'failover' cluster as well?
