"man dump" Too easy?

| I am trying to back up 4 file systems adding up to ~2.5 gigs
| I have DDS-1 tapes 2gigs uncompressed 4gigs compressed
| when I run /sbin/dump 0uf /dev/nrst0 /dev/hda1
| it tells me that I need about 48.6 tapes

Sounds like you need to use the d and s options to dump.
It's not psychic, and the defaults are based on 1600bpi 2300foot tapes.
