GPM Question

I have a Microsoft Intellimouse and I am running RedHat Linux 5.1, kernel
2.0.35. In the RedHat Installation Guide, it suggests issuing the command
'rpm -t pnp -R' to get the Intellimouse to work in Linux. When I type this
command, I get a "gpm already running" message. So I shut down gpm with the
'kill' command and then retype the command and my mouse works. However I'd
like to be able to use my Intellimouse without having to type that command
all the time. Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.
