Best thing to do if you really do need to upgrade may be to look for RPM's for 
XFree86 4.2.0. You might see if RedHat 7.3 uses 4.2.0, and get the RPM's from 
inside that distribution. It is reasonably likely to work with RH7.2; they 
shouldn't be that different.

Barring that, you will want to rpm -e everything that is XFree86 and get the 
appropriate binary packages from ftp.xfree86.org. I don't recommend that 
course of action, as you will find a large number of thing dependant on X 
being there, so removing it without leaving a hole in your rpm configuration 
will be difficult.
