That would be switchdesk from a xterm, or
Programs->System->Desktop Switching Tool
in the GNOME menus.

You can also edit $HOME/.Xclients-default
or $HOME/.Xclients-$HOSTNAME$DISPLAY if
you want perhost or perdisplay control.
for GNOME .Xclients-default says
exec gnome-session

for KDE it's
exec startkde
