Maybe I should be extra scared going down this path. It took 30
minutes to get a first reply from the mailing list sign-up and now
after another 30 minutes I don't have a response accepting me to the
list.

Not a good sign...

I will happily accept the model numbers of any other generally
available under $100, scanners well supported by Sane.  I'm not picky
on features. We're jsut scanning homework here...
