installing kernel.2.6.9-42.ELsmp on RHEL 4 64Bit

Hello,

Did you update your boot parameters? I mean the grub.conf to reflect the new 
kernel. If this was not done automatically, it will still be loading the old 
kernel.

You can try uname -a to check the kernel loaded.
