Check your iptables manually using the CLI. Type in

$ iptables -L

to list your current ruleset. If it balks you might have to add the
appropriate path. /sbin/iptables -L might work. Check to see if port 53
(DNS) is blocked. Do a "$ man iptables" to learn how to use iptables
effectively. There are also som tutorials floating round the web. Google
them in if the man pages are confusing.
