Logical Volume Management.  It allows you more flexibility in
allocating storage for filesystems.  See the HOWTO for more info:

Your existing system is probably already set up with it.

You still need a normal ~100MB partition for the ext3 /boot
filesystem, but for the big partition assigned to LVM, it should be
type LVM.
