Re: RedHat 7.1/6.2 & Bind

    Sorry ...... I found them ......

Anyway, I'd like to suggest a change on BIND packages ( if there's anyone from RedHat in the list ) ...

The init script shipped with BIND9 RPMs from RH ( /etc/rc.d/init.d/named ) has a problem on the stop function, more exaclty on the 'killproc named' command.

What problem ???? Well, I don't believe that lots of people are actually using dynamic dns with bind9, but if somebody uses it with bind9 shipped with RH, they MIGHT have problems.

When an update is made dinamically on BIND, those updates are NOT commited immediatly to the zone files on the disk. Instead, they stay in memory and are commited to disk every 15 minutes. The problem is, if some update is 'hot' in memory ( that means, in memory and NOT in disk yet ), the 'killproc named' will shut named WITHOUT writing those updates on the zone files.

How to fix it ??? Easy easy ...... I suggest that instead of 'killproc named', the stop function on named init script uses '/usr/sbin/rndc stop'.

    From rndc help .....

......
stop Save pending updates to master files and stop the server.
......

I just tested it now bind-9.1.3.0-rc1 DOES contain the described problem, so I'll assume all bind9 RH packages are afftected by this 'may have a' problem.

    Hope hearing from you soon,
    Leonardo Rodrigues
