If you have the RedHat kernel source installed, then you have the default 
config files available as well.
Have a look in /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/, find the one for your 
architecture, and copy it to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config. Then you can run 
make config and modify a known working configuration.

Reading some of the howtos posted in answer to your initial question 
would probably help you out a lot.
