resize filesystems

Assumming you are using the default ext3 (or ext2) filesystems you can 
definitely resize these using either parted or resize2fs.
The problem you may have is that parted can only extend partitions, or 
reduce them - the starting cylinder remains the same. you can't move 
partitions around!
