There are one or two repositories, which contain newer KDE and GNOME
packages for Red Hat Linux and Fedora Core. Some other repositories also
provide add-on packages built for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Not sure
whether anybody attempts at providing a newer KDE/GNOME for RHEL,
though. You may need to rebuild from src.rpm. Packaging KDE/GNOME is not
trivial, and generally, RHEL users don't like to break their systems.
The add-on repositories should be easy to find with a basic search at
Google. But users, who install KDE/GNOME upgrades for Red Hat Linux or
Fedora Core, for instance, in message boards report various problems
with those packages or even fail to install the upgrades due to many
conflicts. I advise against installing the very recent versions, because
there has not been put enough effort into testing the packages and into
making sure they install cleanly at least. There is no gain in trying
such experimental packages unless you want to devote a box to testing
software which may break your system badly. Better stick to the tested
and working stuff.
