Defunct process

Hi all.

I run an application (nagios 1.2) on redhat 7.2 and it's fine.

I plan to migrate to redhat 9. I've installed the application and applied
the same configuration from rh7.2 box.

In the new box (rh9) the application runs fine, but after some hours I
always get a defunct process:

nagios 22138  0.0  0.0  0  0 ?   Z   Jul31  0:00 [nagios <defunct>]

After this the application stops working.

How can I discover what is causing the <defunct> process?
