--so far:

--i got back in and changed the permissions for /var/gdm back
--to the way i found them and i have the original message back:

[snip]
Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set
to /var/gdm but has the wrong permissions, it should have
permissions of 0750. Please correct the permissions or the
gdm configuration /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and restart gdm
[/snip]

--one google.com post says :
[snip groups.google.com]

The solution to the original problem is to add the user to group lock.

 /etc/group:

 lock::54:user1,user2
[/snip groups.google.com]

--i did this for gdm, but the problem is still around. has
--anyone ever heard of this? i don't recall having to change
--the permissions for much of anything under /var ... what
--gives?

--thanks!

--original message--

I was shutting down / rebooting the server when a message
came up saying that /var/gdm has the right owner, but
should be set to 0750 permissions. I did log in and
chmod 0750 /var/gdm and rebooted the server.
