modem question

Hi all,
Another questions thanks to the computer dying. I have dialup with
earthlink. When I first used pppd and called with my us robotics 56k
modem I forgot they had changed the access number it connected did
handshaking and then their server hung up. I remembered the number
changed a few weeks ago so found it and dialed the new number the
connection script fails, yet I switched modems to my zoom 56k modem
now the connection script works with the new number. The only change
was the modem all the files stayed the same. Any ideas what is going on?
