Linus,
you already figured it out when you said to look at "rpm -qf". That will 
explain it. I don't think there is a true vi included with RH, you need to 
compile it if you want.
Here is what I get after doing rpm -qf on /bin/vi and the aliased /usr/bin/vim 
then looked at the info on those rpm's:

rpm -qi vim-minimal-6.2.532-1
Description :
VIM (Vi IMproved) is an updated and improved version of the vi editor.
Vi was the first real screen-based editor for UNIX, and is still very
popular. VIM improves on vi by adding new features: multiple windows,
multi-level undo, block highlighting, and more. The vim-minimal
package includes a minimal version of VIM, which is installed into
/bin/vi for use when only the root partition is present.
