jumping in late on this one ... :-)
if you want a definitive list of the device types and major/minor numbers that 
apply to them , you can install the kernel-source rpm for your current kernel 
version and read
/usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/devices.txt
there no longer appears to be a specific kernel-doc rpm.
