Continuing Gnome Configuration Problem

Excellent idea!  Have you tried removing $HOME/.Xclients to default your X?

I thought of that option already and have dismissed it because it only 
avoids the problem.  I would particularly like to use this opportunity to 
expand my skills and knowledge and actually identify and solve the problem.
