Hid driver not loaded for usb device

Forgive me for potentially posting to the wrong group, but this is the
most helpful of them all...some I'm hoping someone has an answer...

I have a APC Back-UPS 500 CS connected to RedHat Enterprise Linux AS v3
(kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.EL). When I do 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices', I
get:

...
T: Bus=03 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 6 Spd=1.5 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=051d ProdID=0002 Rev= 0.06
S: Manufacturer=American Power Conversion
S: Product=Back-UPS CS 500 FW:806.q5.D USB FW:q5
S: SerialNumber=BB0517031956
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 6 Ivl=100ms
...

Notice Driver=(none). If I swap with CS 500 with another on the same
machine, the driver gets loaded and reads:

I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hid

So I'm pretty confident the machine is properly configured.

I googled for this and posted to the apcupsd list but everyone says the
solution is to upgrade to kernel 2.4.22. RedHat hasn't done this yet.
It doesn't make sense either cause we have 2 other machines configured
the same way properly connected to a CS 500. We have an additional 14
machines connected to ES 725s without any trouble, so I suspect it's the
UPS? Would anyone agree, or have any ideas how to get hid to load?

Thanks,
