to hide file

There is no special 'hide' property for files or directories in Linux
filesystem. Therefore, the filesystem will always report to application
every file in the directory. However, files could be hidden at the
application level, so the file will be known to application but will not
be reported to the user by that application nor included in the
selections by file name masks. By convention, almost every application
will consider as hidden (and will not report to user nor otherwise
select) every file (or directory) with the name beginning with '.'
(dot).
