kernel panic after recompile

My issue recently was the following:

After a kernel recompile, I got a kernel panic. The kernel could not mount the root filesystem.
The reason it couldn't do this is because it did not know what the device was.
The hardware in question is IBM X-series 345. This internal SCSI disks I found out 
were not compiled into the kernel by default, thus following a kernel recompile, the kernel
could not mount a filesystem from a device it could not see.
I recompiled the kernel with what I discovered was MPT Fusion SCSI support, this resolved my
problem. I cannot recall whether I compiled it in kernel, or as a module - in which case one
would require the initial ram disk image. But either way, my problem was resolved after I 
learnt that my internal SCSI disk drivers needed to be included.
